Potions
Snape would be proud of you for clicking on this post!
Ever wanted to brew over a witch’s cauldron and research basic theory on love potions?
It might not actually look like what you’re imagining.
But as your reliable modern witch, I’m here to tell you all that I’ve found on the subject!

It’s not actually like Harry Potter
Although I do love the books, it didn’t lead me to witchcraft any more than Mary Poppins.
But there is a little bit of overlap!
In this book, Hannah Abbott attempts to make a potion called the Draught of Peace.
It’s a complicated mixture intended to calm the drinker’s nerves.
I thought, “Hey, I know that one!”
As a witch myself (who can separate fantasy from reality), this was one of the few moments when I encountered similarities between this highly successful book series and modern witchcraft.
Before we begin we need to talk about water.
In most modern witchcraft practices there is a heavy emphasis on the elements.
The sun, weather, seasons, and harvests incorporate fire, air, earth, and water.
(And spirit, but we’ll get into that in a later post)
About 90% of the time most witches are focusing on the above themes in their practice.
The other 10% is solely on the moon.

You’ll see a lot of clothing and accessories in a witch’s boudoir with the phases of the moon.
The moon lights our way at night.
The moon impacts the motion of the tides.
The moon can affect people’s moods.
(Where we get the term LUNAtic)
So what’s the point?
Point being: water, oceans, streams, lakes, rivers, and the moon are hugely important in the construction of potions.
Because water is such an important part of our lives, water in potions make for a very potent spell!
Okay, I have water. Now what?
The next item on the agenda of discussion is intent.
Now, I will be sharing hexing potions that I’ve used.
I’ll also give you my version of the Draught of Peace.
What exactly I intend with these potions is what determines the success of potions.
Intention setting is by far the most crucial part of the potion.
How to manifest intention:
It can be as easy as thinking about what you want.
But for the best results, you could try one or more of these:
- Meditating on your desired outcome
- Writing down desires in exact detail
- Talking to your potion and telling it what you want
- Create a rhyming chant
- Sleep next to your spell
- Or even performing your own ritual!
Intention is the driving force behind the oomph of your potion.
But so is your mental state.
Seriously, bro.
DO NOT make a potion or spell when you’re angry!
Every time I’ve done this it has backfired on me WITHOUT FAIL.
That heightened energy and passion is a literal recipe for disaster.
I cannot emphasize this enough.
But the same is also true of other strong emotions.
If I’m overly sad the potion just thuds and does nothing.
If I’m too excited to do something awesome with my spell, I can get forgetful with what I’m doing.
If I’m drunk?
Well … Let’s just forget that ever happened.
The best way to begin the process is with a neutral state of mind.
Water and intention. Check!
Let’s talk about types of potions.
When I think “potion” I’m generally referring to the ones you drink.
However, there are several different kinds of potions.
And some that would be very, very unwise to put inside your body.
Here’s some spells that I consider to be under the potion category:
1. Teas.
The kind you drink! Herbal teas, Bubble teas, kombucha, and coffee to name a few.
2. Sugar/vinegar jars.
To impact yourself or others. Be careful to note which ones are edible. I’ll give you the recipes below!
3. Baths.
Drinking this would not be pleasant. Expect to set aside several hours for this brew.
4. Essential oils.
Rubbing oils, candle dressings, aromatherapy, and an over-saturated market.
Let’s get down to business.
The next thing we need to talk about is ingredients!
What would a potion be without eye of newt or frog’s breath?

If you have scrolled down quickly to find a recipe, I strongly encourage you to read the information above.
This isn’t allrecipes.com where I spell out my life story before showing you how to make banana bread.

Okay, let’s go.
Sugar Jar

These potions are designed to sweeten something to you.
And they are my absolute favorite to brew!
Want to make new friends in a social space?
Want to impress your boss?
Want to find a new apartment?
Want to get laid?
This is the potion for you!

PROS: easy, effective, inexpensive
CONS: takes time, takes focus
Warnings: DO NOT DRINK, flammable
It’s important to note also that since these can be used as love potions, results may vary.
Be sure to have a fire safe area to work in.
Ingredients:
- Jar with lid
- Sugar
- Honey
- Paper
- Pen
- Water
- Cinnamon, red pepper, hot sauce, Flamin’ Hot Cheeto dust, or other spicy addition
- Candle

Directions:
Fill the jar 3/4 with moon water (just leave under a full moon overnight)
Add 2 TBSP of sugar and honey
Write your desire on the piece of paper as definitive statements (i.e. “I will find an affordable apartment” or “I will get that promotion”)
Add paper to the jar
Add 1 TBSP of spice–bonus points if you make it personal
Secure with lid and shake that bitch up
(NOTE: you can additionally add a personal item relating to your desire for extra intention)
Place your candle on top of the jar and light
Allow the candle to burn completely
You can get a sense of what your outcome will look like after the wax has fully melted and hardened over the jar
Leave in a prominent place
Over the coming weeks, shake up the jar every few days and repeat your desire
Record your results in a journal or share with your other witchy friends!
Vinegar Jar
This type of potion is for things you DON’T want.

The recipe is essentially the same as the sugar jar except instead of honey or sugar…

PROS: easy, effective, inexpensive
CONS: takes time, takes focus, can backfire
Depending on your desire this potion spell can be disastrous.
Warnings: DO NOT DRINK, flammable, proceed with caution
If you’ve never performed a jinx, hex, or curse before then this may not be for you.
If you desire to jinx, hex, or curse someone then this blog may not be fore you.
We’re all about positivity here and I rarely go to the trouble of messing with that stuff.
However,
If you’re looking to…
- Keep landlords away
- Keep fuckboys away
- Protect yourself from unwanted situations
- Dispel a curse placed on you
- Ward yourself against toxicity
- Generally protect yourself or others
Then this potion may be for you!
Simply follow the directions for the sugar jar!
Just remember to sub out sugar and honey for the vinegar.

Let’s talk about drinks!
Hot teas, iced teas, bubble teas, kombucha, coffee, mixed alcoholic drinks, and more!
Remember when we talked about intention?
Any consumable can become a potion!

It’s all about that bass.
And by bass I mean mindfulness.
As we’ve discussed in the past, your practice is unique to you.
That means the drink selection itself isn’t important as long as it’s meaningful.
This is a great resource for making something your very own:
Although if this is your first introduction to mindfulness, that’s okay!
PROS: easy, indulgent
CONS: can be expensive, only a quick fix
Ingredients:
Get your very favorite drink, of any kind (treat yo self)
A straw or spoon to mix
Directions:
Do this as your first major action of the day
Set the drink in front of you either in your lap or on a flat surface
Have your desire in mind
This can be…
- Have a good day
- Attract abundance
- Bring peace
- Focus on positivity
- Calm your nerves
Or any affirming narrative you wish for the coming day
Using your stirring utensil, think of your desire and stir clockwise three times
That’s it!
And if you want to dispel something, just stir counterclockwise!

Become the potion
When your bath tub or shower becomes a steamy cauldron.

Showers and baths are great for muscle relaxation.
Turns out they’re also great for manifesting.
PROS: relaxing, flexible, forgiving, cleansing
CONS: takes focus
But first you need to ask yourself two questions:
- What do you want to manifest?
- Which elements work best?
The answer to the first question is up to you.
But here’s an example!
I want to manifest some body positivity. I haven’t been very kind to myself lately and I need some self care.”
Me, last week
I’m fortunate to own a bath tub, but this could have been done in the shower as well.
Ingredients:
You!
Warm water
Water-safe elements that correspond to your desire
Moisturizer
Directions:
Take as long or little time to focus on your intentions
Bathe without judgment (you do you!)
Dry off and apply your skin care routine
So what do I put in my bath, anyway?

For me, I used my favorite crystals, a bath bomb, a lit candle, essential oils, and my favorite music.
Warnings:
DO NOT DRINK, OBVS.
And some of your crystals can’t always come into the water with you.
Here’s a quick go-to for your crystal buddies:
https://amarisland.myshopify.com/blogs/news/water-safe-crystals-which-ones-are-and-which-are-not
And the fun, flexible thing about being a main ingredient of your own potion is that you can do this ritual any time of the day or night as you desire.
And you can use whatever water-safe ingredients that speak to you the most.
Lastly…

I’ve always been vocal about avoiding pyramid schemes and Multi-Level Marketing schemes.
Find a favorite lotion, shea butter, essential oil, or coconut oil, etc.
But be mindful of your sources and always do your own research.
That’s it for now!
There are tons of possible potion-making recipes across a very broad scheme.
And I’m sure to add more recipes as my practice grows.
If you think of something in addition to this list, add it in the comments.
Be sure to keep a journal for yourself in case you think of something you’d like to try!

What do you think?
Did you enjoy this collection of ideas?
Let me know!
I’m always adding recipes and collabing with other people to expand my practice.
Was any of this helpful?
Comment how you intend to manifest next!
Okay I love you, see you soon!
xoxo
