Crystal Balls

This post is designed to be a brief overview on how to read crystal balls.

It’s a form of divination to see visions, gain insightful messages, and connect to your higher self.

Just to name a few!

As a disclaimer, remember that these are from my own personal experience.

You do you.

Let’s get started!

Can I see the future or tell my fortune?

Scrying is a method to see the future, and if you’re scrying by gazing into a crystal ball, this is one method to see the future.

In this context, it’s generally believed that any future you see is not set in stone.

Rather, whatever vision or fortune comes to you is an image of the future if nothing changes.

This could be true of good, bad, and even confusing or distorted visions.

For my purposes, I use my crystal ball to meditate and open myself to any message the universe wants to give me.

Can reading a crystal ball be dangerous?

That all depends on your method.

Generally, unless you’re practicing a particularly complicated ritual including ancestral work and/or astral travel, this is harmless.

But just to be safe I always cast a circle, something I recommend for all-purpose witchy work.

You can find the link on how to do that here: https://thatbigwitchenergy.com/casting-a-circle/

If at any point you feel uncomfortable, it’s always fine to set it aside and come back later.

Or not, it’s your practice!

Handle your balls with care.

Get a crystal ball!

This is one of the very few witchy practices that actually requires an upfront cost.

Your ball can be any size, so if cost is an issue, I’ll provide a few links for some affordable ones below.

A lot of crystal balls are really just glass, so make sure you know what kind of material your ball is made from.

Glass is not necessarily unusable, but I definitely think that crystal gives the clearest images.

As always, be sure to try and support your local metaphysical shop if you have one!

Cleanse.

Yourself and your environment.

This is something a lot of witches do to get their tools “used” to their energy.

So, if the ball had been sitting in a warehouse for a while or somewhere in storage, this is a way to energize the ball.

As if the crystal has a personality, a lot of people like to spend time with their new equipment before trying them out.

Some people introduce themselves and talk to the ball.

Some sleep next to it for a week or so.

Some pass the ball through incense.

Some also wash the ball in running water, but do your research and make sure your materials are safe in water.

Get in your head space!

Lean into it.

This could be nothing more than lighting some incense and meditating your own way.

But it’s really, really important to make sure you aren’t distracted.

If you listen to witchy music, that’s fine, but don’t leave the TV on in the background.

And unless you’re more advanced and doing a reading for someone else, be sure to do this alone.

Pets should be in another room and all phones turned off.

And whatever connects you to the here and now, do that!

Charge!

This is a good thing to do if:

  1. You’re new to the crystal ball game
  2. You’re doing a specific reading with specific questions
  3. You want something to visualize during your reading
  4. You’ve had a sucky day before your reading
  5. Your energy is dull and you need to focus

This is nothing more than sitting down with your ball and making it aware of your presence.

Talk to it if you want, or just place your hands on it and imagine everything else not related to your reading going to the back burner.

You can do this for however long you want, or even as a way to meditate before you begin.

Important!

Don’t forget to breathe!

It helps to visualize deeply inhaling your energy and deeply exhaling into the crystal through your fingertips.

This transfers your energy depending on your religion or faith practice.

Or just do this however you want.

But make sure you get some O2.

Begin!

Environment:

Your environment is very important.

The best readings in my experience are done at night.

There’s less activity on the roads if you live near a heavily populated area.

There are less visual distractions.

People are less likely to text or call during this time. Even if my phone is off, I worry about who is trying to contact me.

Overall, I think reading at night and in the dark is best.

I usually light a tealight candle and place it behind my ball so I can have a little light.

Focus and attention are key.

Yourself:

Any heightened emotions will influence your reading.

Meaning, if you’re feeling overly angry or sad, it’s not the right time to do this.

Either meditate to calm your nerves or leave the reading for another time.

For more advanced practices, this would be a very vulnerable and dangerous state to be in for a reading.

Relax and find the most comfortable position for your body and mind.

I have a post on how to ground yourself for such occasions:

Your bread and butter.

The reading:

At this point, and before any spell, I like to rub my hands together and really create a lot of friction.

Once my hands begin to tingle I place them about an inch away from the ball and feel that energy transfer before fully grasping the ball.

For a more visual in-depth look at this, I recommend Harmony Nice, who was one of the first voices to get me into my craft:

As such, your hands are an important asset to your craft.

Rub your hands around the ball and try to connect to it in a way that is personal to you.

Once done, keep your hands connected to the ball and maintain focus.

This attentiveness will result in the best reading.

Are you trying to connect to an ancestor?

Are you attempting to glimpse into the spirit world?

Are you querying the universe for guidance?

Are you opening yourself to any messages you need to hear?

Are you trying to see the past/future?

Think about your intentions and focus until you feel a deep connection with your crystal.

Once felt, follow these instructions:

It’s time to gaze.

Remember those weird psychedelic images that looked like a bunch of nonsense until an image finally appeared?

The magic eye illusions?

These.

That’s the kind of focus you need for this.

You need to find a spot on the crystal ball that draws you in.

Once found, do not move your eyes. Gaze into this spot directly.

Try to focus as if you’re looking into a magic eye illusion.

Continue in this space until you feel comfortable asking your question or connecting to your intended target.

This may take a while.

Clear images or symbols may appear, some auditory clues may emerge.

This is sense deprivation.

This is vision via hallucination.

Is something confusing?

Take a mental note, but don’t stop.

Sometimes this can be memories, smells, and even temperatures.

There’s a lot of room for subjectivity, so practice makes perfect!

That’s it!

It may not seem like much!

But this form of divination takes a lot of patience.

Take your time with it and make sure to record your findings in a journal for future use!

Disclaimer:

Going to a psychic for a psychic reading can vary.

I don’t mean to discredit other practitioners, but it’s very easily to be taken advantage of.

Especially when there’s money on the line.

Especially if you’ve recently experienced a deep personal loss.

Even in the witchy community, as with any community, there can be some rotten eggs.

Practicing on your own is more than fine.

But before you go pay a psychic for a reading I recommend you do your research.

Both on the person and this video on hot reading from Holy Koolaid:

Protect yourself from vultures.

Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out.”

Arthur Hayes Sulzberger

Skepticism is a healthy form of discernment.

Always be safe!

What do you think?

My door is always open for feedback and questions.

Tell me what you think!

Leave a comment or message me personally about how you practice.

Blessed be,
